NEW YORK – As the clock was bleeding to 0:00, the final Knicks’ shot bounced off the rim, into the air and sped swiftly toward the row of photographers on the baseline. The ball hung for a moment, just waiting on the hands of history. Out of nowhere, LeBron James – dehydrated and cramped, legs losing hops – made one final leap at Madison Square Garden and snatched his triple-double out of the sky. He crashed into the photographers, banged his head on a lense and clutched the ball, laughing and laughing and laughing.

“I never thought you could look at the box score and see somebody with 50 points and a triple-double,” James marveled. “But it’s happened.”

It hadn’t happened since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it 34 years ago, but in those final, frantic seconds, James had 52 points, 11 assists and needed that 10th rebound to push past the boundaries, even within a beautiful basketball mind that sees the limitlessness of possibility. James would’ve chased that rebound into the Hudson River to make sure he upstaged Kobe Bryant at the Garden and delivered a genius performance that was a little Michael and Magic, a little Big O and Kareem.

So take heart, Jackie Smith and Rich Gannon: When people refer to the “Biggest Busts in Super Bowl History,” they are no longer talking about you.

As for everybody else? Take a chill pill. We’re going through some challenging times in the U.S. and across the football-watching world, but nothing about Sunday’s game between the Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers should be causing us to get our panties (sprayed-on or otherwise) in a bunch.

Look, I know the wretched excess of the two-week buildup for Super Bowl XLIII – and of the NFL in general – tends to get us worked up about everything from Ben Roethlisberger’s ribs to the real Kurt Warner’s glove-covered hands. I understand that money and bragging rights and legacies are on the line, and that football is not a subtle game, and that the passion of the paying and viewing customers is what drives the process in the first place.

The Cardinals continued their stunning run through the playoffs Sunday, beating the Eagles 32-25 to win their first NFC title and advance to the first Super Bowl in franchise history.

"It's just surreal," guard Reggie Wells said. "We've been doing a good job of not buying into the moment, taking it for what it is and really believing in the ultimate goal, and that's winning the whole thing. We're one step closer."

Whisenhunt wins by playing the right Cards

Okay, so the Chargers didn't make it... :( and now I am going for my other Home team CARDINALS!!!! let's make more history!!

Ken Whisenhunt played parts of six seasons in the NFL. If the memory doesn’t jump out at you, it’s OK. He was a fairly anonymous tight end, blocking back and special teams guy; one of those hard-nosed, versatile players coaches love to have around.

He started 43 games. He scored five career touchdowns. He once returned a squib kick 14 yards. He had his moments, only for bad teams. Playing for the Falcons of the late 1980s and the Jets of the early 1990s, Whisenhunt’s teams went a combined 31-63-1 and never posted a winning season.

He was, no doubt, around a lot of bad, failed coaches.

Chargers list Tomlinson as doubtful

SAN DIEGO -- LaDainian Tomlinson was officially listed as doubtful by the San Diego Chargers on Friday, two days before they play at Pittsburgh in the AFC divisional playoffs.

Tomlinson himself said he was doubtful two days earlier, and there's a growing expectation that the 2006 NFL MVP won't play due to a detached tendon in his groin.

"I'm going to hold out hope, but I don't know if that's realistic," coach Norv Turner said.

Tomlinson played just over a quarter in Saturday night's 23-17 overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts before the injury forced him to the sideline after he scored on a 3-yard run.

Turner said there was no need to rule Tomlinson out before Sunday.

NEW YORK -- Peyton and Eli Manning were voted to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday, the first time quarterback-playing brothers have been chosen for the same all-star game.

The Indianapolis Colts' Peyton will make his ninth appearance in 11 seasons and will start for the AFC. It will be the first appearance for Eli, who was the MVP for the New York Giants in last February's Super Bowl. He will be on the NFC team.

The Giants also landed the oldest Pro Bowler ever, 44-year-old kicker John Carney, who was signed at the start of the season as a short-term fill-in for the injured Lawrence Tynes. He has made 27 of 29 field goals -- the two he missed were blocked -- and has kept the now-recovered Tynes inactive for all but two games.

Federer withdraws from Paris; Nalbandian reaches semifinals

PARIS -- Roger Federer pulled out of his quarterfinal match against James Blake because of a back injury Friday, and defending champion David Nalbandian advanced to the Paris Masters semifinals by defeating Andy Murray 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Federer said his back was stiff this week and felt worse when he woke up Friday.

"It did not respond to the treatment I had last night," Federer said on his Web site. "As a precaution and because I would be unable to play at 100 percent tonight, I have unfortunately had to take the difficult decision not to play."

The 13-time Grand Slam champion has never reached the semifinals at the Bercy indoor arena after losing in the 2002 and 2003 quarterfinals.

Brady has more procedures for infection; Pats upset with situation

Doctors are aggressively fighting an infection in Tom Brady's surgically repaired left knee.

Brady recently acknowledged on his Web site that doctors went in "to clean and to test the wound" on Oct. 15 because of the infection. The New England Patriots quarterback has had two more similar procedures since then.

The story was first reported by the Boston Herald and confirmed by ESPN's Wendi Nix.

The Patriots, as an organization, are upset with the situation because they were clear that they wanted Brady's surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston, sources told ESPN.

Instead, Brady opted to have the surgery in California by a doctor his family preferred, and now there are major problems. Brady was supposed to be back in New England by now, but a timeline for his return remains unclear

San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy, the Cy Young Award winner currently being dangled in trade talks, initially indicated to the Padres that he would prefer a deal to one of five teams -- Atlanta, St. Louis, the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros.

But because San Diego apparently isn't close to honing in on a deal with any of those five, sources say that the Padres are reaching out to other teams, as well.

Peavy, 27, has a full no-trade clause, and he has not given San Diego any indication that he would accept a deal to the Yankees or any other American League team. But the Padres are in the process of gauging interest from those clubs, as well -- and if they were to identify an offer that they find acceptable, perhaps for a couple of pitchers and a center fielder, officials with other teams sense that San Diego would move quickly to complete a deal.

The NBA trading frenzy that normally seizes teams come February could be arriving a little early this season. Assigned to write a column on who could be traded during this season, I was surprised by the number of teams that seemed "open for business" on the trade front.

Typically, significant trades don't go down in preseason, or the first month of the season. It usually isn't until December, with a month or more of games under everyone's belts, that we start hearing the trade drums. But this year, from the sound of things, the talk may be coming faster and more furiously than in years past.

Why? Two factors seem to be in play.

First, it was a relatively quiet summer as far as trades go. We saw some fireworks on draft night, but after that … for the most part, crickets.

Ron Artest got traded. So did Mo Williams and Marcus Camby. But that's not enough to call it a blockbuster summer.

Russian official questions emergency response in Cherepanov's death

MOSCOW -- A Russian lawmaker said Tuesday that rising hockey star Alexei Cherepanov, a first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, may have died due to negligence on the part of paramedics who responded to an emergency call.

Russian investigators said Cherepanov suffered from chronic ischemia, a medical condition in which not enough blood gets to the heart or other organs.

Pavel Krasheninnikov, who sits on the Russian Hockey Federation's supervisory council and is a member of the State Duma, said there was no ambulance on duty at the arena where Cherepanov's Russian team, Avangard Omsk, was playing.

Alleged victim in North Philly shooting sues Harrison

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison has not been charged in an April 29 shooting in North Philadelphia, allegedly committed with a gun licensed to him, and a police investigation into the incident remains open. But the alleged victim isn't waiting for the criminal justice system to decide what charges, if any, Harrison should face before seeking his day in court.

The alleged victim, Dwight Dixon, has filed a civil suit against Harrison, claiming that he suffered "serious and permanent injuries … and a severe shock to his nerves and nervous system" as a result of the shooting, which wounded his left hand, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

While Harrison acknowledged to city police detectives that he had been in a fight with Dixon prior to the shooting, he insisted that he had nothing to do with the shooting, sources said, according to the report.

F1 schedule in 2009 won't include any North American races

North America will be absent from next year's Formula One world championship after the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from a revised calendar issued by the sport's governing body on Tuesday.

No reason was given by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) but the race at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a favorite with teams and sponsors, had previously been paired with the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis that was axed this year.

It's the first time since 1987 that the Canadian GP won't be on the F1 schedule. Contractual problems between Circuit Gilles Villeneuve officials and commercial rights holder F1 management are believed to have contributed to the decision.

I am not a wrestler fan, but even I had heard of this Kimbo guy, and I was watching the fight and was expecting this result, but the other way around....

SUNRISE, Fla. – The legend of Kimbo Slice was built by beating bums in boat yards and back alleys not far from here. It came crashing down Saturday courtesy of a quick punch from a pink-haired journeyman giving up two inches in height, four in reach and 30 pounds in muscle and might.

One simple shot sent Slice to the canvas and from there some guy named Seth Petruzelli needed just 12 punches and 14 seconds to put an end (we hope) to one of the great sporting charades of all time.

It was just a matter of time before Kimbo got exposed. He was little more than a character out of central casting, a bunch of addictive YouTube videos and a lot of insane hype by CBS, which made him a headliner before he made himself a fighter.

Sheriff: Search teams find Fossett wreckage in California mountains

An aerial search late Wednesday spotted what appeared to be wreckage in the Inyo National Forest near the town of Mammoth Lakes, sheriff John Anderson said. Ground crews were sent to verify the sighting, and they confirmed it was Fossett's single-engine Bellanca plane, Anderson said.

Cards' Boldin resting at home; Jets' Smith suspended one game

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets safety Eric Smith was suspended for one game by the NFL on Monday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

Smith was also fined $50,000 by the league for what it called a flagrant violation of player safety rules. In a statement, the NFL said Boldin was in a defenseless position at the time contact was made.

Boldin was resting at home Monday, a day after being carted off the field following the scary collision in the Cardinals' 56-35 loss to the Jets at the Meadowlands. Smith briefly lost consciousness after the play, and still felt "a little fuzzy."

Doctors: Shot Jacksonville lineman is paralyzed

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier, shot while sitting in a car outside an apartment complex earlier this month, is paralyzed below the waist and his left leg was amputated, his doctor said Monday.

Collier was on a ventilator for about three weeks and has no memory of the shooting, said Dr. Andy Kerwin, a surgeon for the University of Florida at Shands Jacksonville hospital.

“His overall condition has improved greatly,” Kerwin said. “We expect him to be discharged soon.”

Armstrong's dope testing made public during comeback

Meanwhile fellow American Greg Lemond, who won the Tour de France in 1986, 1989 and 1990, said Armstrong's return was not good for the sport.

"His return is not good news," Lemond told AFP in Las Vegas. "It's like a nightmare, that we have lived through all these years, returning."

Armstrong said he would be working with Don Catlin, the founder of the new Anti-Doping Research Institute in Los Angeles, in an attempt to be completely open about his tests.

Inquiry into Chinese gymnasts' ages broadens to include 2000 Games

International gymnastics officials are examining whether Yang Yun and Dong Fangxiao, in particular, were old enough to compete at the Sydney Olympics. Gymnasts must turn 16 during the Olympic year.

Falcons safety charged with DUI, speeding

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Falcons safety Lawyer Milloy has been arrested on DUI and speeding charges in suburban Atlanta.

Authorities say the 34-year-old player was released from jail Monday morning after posting bond of more than $1,600. He was arrested about five hours earlier. A police spokeswoman did not have details on the arrest.

Milloy is in his 13th NFL season, his third with Atlanta.

Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O'Neal reportedly told an Orlando, Fla. television station Wednesday that he will retire in two years, after his contract with the Suns ends.
O'Neal, 36, was traded to the Suns last season in a deal with the Miami Heat. Forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks went to the Heat in the deal.
He averaged 12.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest with the Suns in 28 regular season games.
O'Neal averaged 15.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in the Suns' five postseason games. Phoenix lost to the San Antonio Spurs in five games.

There is no right way to feel. There was joy. It was justified. There is now sadness. It is justified.

There was appreciation, amazement and fondness, and there is now betrayal, disappointment and fraudulence, and Monday, the 10th anniversary of Mark McGwire scorching his 62nd home run over the left-field fence at Busch Stadium, triggers the emotional gamut because each side is indubitably tied to the other.

The duality will forever exist when looking back on 1998, the happiest time in recent baseball history. It was baseball’s Summer of Love, wondrous and carefree, where drug use was ignored and life celebrated. Everyone, from baseball neophytes to lifers, got caught up in the back-and-forth home run duel between McGwire and Sammy Sosa as they chased Roger Maris’ single-season record.
